Why Health & Social Care is Important
Health & Social Care is a vocational course that helps students understand how care is provided in society across a range of sectors. It develops students’ empathic skills and fosters a sense of understanding and respect for others.
Teaching and Learning in Health & Social Care
The Cambridge National Level 1 and 2 qualification in Health and Social Care is equivalent to one GCSE and is vocationally related qualification . This course provides students with an introduction to the world of Health and Social Care, allowing them to understand the principles of quality care in action. Students will explore a variety of aspects ranging from health specialist pathways, social care specialism and early years.
Students will also be given practical experience and will undertake taster sessions at both Elm Academy and a care environment.
Curriculum Vision Health & Social Care
Key Stage 4
The Cambridge National in Health & Social Care aims to equip students with both the practical skills and the knowledge behind working within this demanding spectrum of subjects. The course allows students to develop essential knowledge of the work place alongside transferable and personal skills.
During the course, students are expected to complete three pieces of externally moderated coursework as well as one external exam.
Coursework units include: Communicating and working with individuals in health, social care and early years setting – Core Unit
Optional Units on Basic First and Understanding Child Development age 0 – 5 years
Exam Unit: Essential values of care for use with individuals in care settings.
The exam is one hour long and involves both short and long answer questions.
Students will begin the course in Year 10 and will be given their first opportunity to sit the exam element of the course in the June of this academic year, with the option to retake in the January of Year 11.
Each of the three coursework units and the exam carry a weighting of 25% per unit towards the final grade, which is awarded at Pass, Merit and Distinction level.
